just picked up a new dvd called "One Take - Vol2"
This is a new series of dvds with different jazz line ups in the studio performing tunes, supposedly in 1st takes. you can get them on CD and DVD
anyway, this one had terri lyne carrington on drums and i am blown away.....!!! i have seen and heard her before but man her playing on this is truly beautiful....i mean really great playing. her phrasing is so gorgeous.
the sound and production on the DVD is superb as are the rest of the band and song selections. her drums and cymbals sound lovely.....i urge you to pick up this DVD....just great swinging jazz with a true master at the drums imo.

Very cool. Thanks Louie. I just saw her in clinic in No. California early this summer. She said that she was not an "exhibition drummer"--gave a very technique and brass tacks oriented Q&A, talked about how she developed her musical approach. I wish I had taken more notes or reviewed it here; was still new to HOD at the time. She avoided the whole chops/showing off thing the whole clinic. And then at the end somebody asked her about her approach to odd times, so she improvised a 7/8 solo that ended up kind of unintentionally showing that she had some smokin' chops. More important, her playing had a strong, individual voice, and was really musical. And then she had to hop a plane to play for Herbie Hancock. Terri also mentioned she would be teaching at USC and Berklee (splitting time between them) this year.
It was funny seeing a bunch of young guys at the clinic blown away by the fact that a "girl" could smoke them on the kit and had that kind of resume. My friend Laurel (a woman and a drummer who works at the music store that brought Terri) was in heaven, and got to drive Terri to the airport afterwards.
I look forward to the vid. Terri's a great player.
i have volume one with vito - got it because i love joey defrancesco but i didnt dig vito's playing - just not in the same league as terri....and the tunes on that one are not as exciting.
volume 2 is recommended.

The Vol. 1 video was done more as an experiment than anything else too, and didn't benefit from any planning or consideration to the end results of the DVD. Vol. 2 is definitely a big step up as far as production quality, but I can listen to Vito ANY day, even when he's not pushing the envelope.
(not trying to diminish Terri Lynn at all btw, I think she is incredible and my favourite drummer who wears lipstick)

I think Terri is one of the most versatile, musical, and subtley advanced players around today. I don't rate her any differently because she's a woman, she was a child prodigy afterall! I read something that said Alan Dawson always considered Terri as his most talented and hard-working pupil, and not Tony, as one may think.
